Doug Brown's Black on Black opens at the Emporium Gallery (3035 St. Antoine Ouest #74) on Thursday, September 10th from 7PM-11PM. The exhibition will also be open on Saturday, September 12th and Sunday September 13th from 12PM-5PM.Private viewings available by appointment from Monday, September 14th to Wednesday, September 16th.

About Black on Black

Toronto's Doug Brown returns to The Emporium Gallery to showcase new oversized, mixed media artworks chock full of mythical, folkloric iconography inspired by the existential darkness and malaise associated with the current global recession and, his own trials and tribulations over the past year. Black on Black is bleak, ominous and begs one to consider how much things will worsen before they improve. 



Artist Statement

"After my previous exhibition last fall, which was colorful and optimistic, I was creatively exhausted and simultaneously affected by the general grimness surrounding the global financial crisis. There was just something different in the air, a new mood of sorts, where everyone was bummed out- a malaise that was compounded, at least where I live, by the fact that winter which was quickly approaching. Black on Black isn't a statement about, or a criticism of, these grim times. Rather, it's a visual exemplification of a perceived universal sentiment that I and others felt- which, when I got down to working, resulted in menacing 'black monk faces' that stare down at us and challenge us."

About Doug Brown

Doug Brown (b. 1977, Canada) is a Toronto-based visual artist. Very much multi-disciplinary with regards to his artworks, Brown is known for his bold, oftentimes oversized stencils, paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces. Having already exhibited in numerous Canadian cities (such as Vancouver where he was part of the launch event for the paperback version of Beautiful Losers), Brown is continually taking his artworks to the masses- intriguing exhibition attendees with the visual onslaught of his artworks' patterns, characters and tactility.

CBC in the Emporium Gallery

The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation), a Canadian crown corporation and the country’s national public radio and television broadcaster, was in the Emporium Gallery today filming both the gallery and Doug Brown's 'Colours' exhibition.

The Emporium Gallery is getting a lot of media attention these days thanks to the great artists that are producing the artwork which we choose to exhibit. Thanks to everyone that's spreading the word and/or supporting our gallery.

Doug Brown's Colours opens Thursday, August 28th at the Emporium Gallery

Doug Brown's Colours opens at the Emporium Gallery (3035 St. Antoine Ouest, #74)on THURSDAY, AUGUST 28TH from 7PM to 11PM. The show will also be open from Friday, August 29th to Sunday, August 30th from 12PM to 6PM. Private viewings will be available by appointment on Monday, August 31st through Wednesday, September 3rd.

About Colours-
Colours will mark Toronto-based visual artist Doug Brown's exhibition debut in Montreal. Featuring oversized stencils, paintings, sculptures and mixed media pieces, Colours is a multifarious yet stylistically cohesive exhibition that brims with Brown's signature coloration, boldness and penchant for mystical, mythical, folkloric and ethnic imagery. Dazzling, tactile and mammoth, Colours will intrigue the senses.

Artist Statement-
I am subconsciously inspired by the randomness that I see in my day to day life in Toronto- and, this randomness becomes somewhat of a pulp in my mind. I do not feel inclined to paint or create per se. Rather, I feel an urge to expel this subconscious pulp and connect the aforementioned through colour. I just want to remove this pulp from my head- which I do artistically. It is what it is, I just want people to understand me through my art- without having to explain what my art is or what my art means.

Doug Brown

We're proud to announce that Doug Brown will be exhibiting new works at the Emporium Gallery this August. I was able to spend a few hours with Doug in his studio a few weeks back and his new works are looking great- big scale and bright colors. We're all quite excited for this exhibition- more details to come closer to the date of the show.

Doug Brown

I got to spend a few hours interviewing/ hanging out with the exceptionally talented Doug Brown last week. Doug's one of the most creative visual artists in Toronto, if not Canada. We're currently working with Doug- we're writing his new artist biography and will be bringing him to the Emporium Gallery in Montreal later this summer. I'm not sure if Doug's got a web presence but you can scope some of his art in the photo section of his Myspace profile. Honestly though, you can only appreciate Doug's work in the flesh- its mammoth scale does not come across online! Ben Pobjoy
