Sophie Jodoin @ Battat Contemporary

Last night I had the privilege of attending Sophie Jodoin's Headgames: hoods, helmets & gasmasks exhibition which happened to the be the inaugural exhibition at Battat Contemporary (7245 Alexandra St, Suite 100). Jodoin's artworks were technically brilliant. Using conté on mylar, Jodoin's Headgames was austere yet emotive thanks to her ability to pair a rough and raw 'attack' style with an incongruous sense of restraint and an eye for details that really distinguished her artworks. Her ability to replicate light source and illustrate both steel and human features is marvelous. And, the fact that she executed 75 heads, all of which eerily floated on the same sight line across the artworks was a technical feat. Headgames is therefore as attractive to artists as it is to gallerists- with Battat Contemporary hanging the artworks with respectable precision.

Battat Contemporary, as a space, is a welcome addition to Montreal's art scene. Large, clean and replete with character, Battat Contemporary is a wonderful venue. I look forward to following their curatorial vision for the space. Headgames runs until April 24th and I encourage Montrealers to check out the exhibition.
